I believe biofuels are the answer for the fuel, running off chemically-processed crops such as rapeseed, to make biodiesel. You can read more about it on the site below.
Meantime though, my understanding is that every last drop of money to be made will be squeezed out of our current fossil fuels, i.e. oil, until the last minute.
I think you can already buy dual-fuel cars that will run off conventional fuels and biofuels, or converter kits to change your vehicle over. But as you well know, such vehicles are not being widely used by the public as yet, partly because the costs of the biofuels are not attractive at the moment, nor necessarily convenient for refuelling.

people today are very present-minded.. they dont think very much into the future. i would venture to say that most dont even know that gas comes from oil that will someday run out.. i cant imagine that if they did, they would still buy gas-guzzling suvs..
where will they all go? into the garbage heap where we put everything else.. perhaps the bottom of an ocean or a lake as well..

We'll all be on E-85 soon anyway, so I think the rate of oil consumption will go way down.
Never underestimate the old saying that "necessity breeds invention."
