It's a very rugged state, and has mountains and beautiful scenery.
Some parts are very poor.
If you're going to travel into those very rural areas and camp or fish or hunt......mind your manners and remember NO hilbilly or "sex with your sister" kind of jokes.
Some (very few) bars can be rough.....do NOT mess with the locals. However, that being said.....I LOVE West Virginia! My experiences with the state are limited to the southern and southeastern areas.
When you get off the highways, many areas have no lights on the roads.,...and there are no street signs at many intersections so getting lost can be easy sometimes.
Go...have a great trip.....the people are usually friendly and down to earth and just enjoy yourself.

It's a gorgeous place. Some cities are very much like any other city that you have been to, but take the time to visit areas like Berkeley Springs, WV. It's close to WInchester, VA, and Breezewood, PA, and is a nice indicator of what a small town with a "main" street was like 50 years ago. Scenic and friendly, WV is perfect for people who enjoy the outdoors. The weather is temperate, and yet the state gets a true representation of all four seasons.

I hear they have great water rafting sites. I've been there a few times...I have family that lives in Charleston. I didn't really like it. Nothing to do, and every time I went it was raining. They have red clay instead of mud....so my shoes turned red. It was almost really depressing. But, go for the water rafting...I hear it's an experience you'll never forget. I'm sure there are other things too.

I have lived in West Virgina for 26 years and I cannot imagine live anywhere else. The outdoor activites are wonderful, I am especially fond on the fly fishing, but there is way too many things to mention to do. If you love beautiful moutains and waters than WV is the place for you.

I am in the northern part of the state, and I know there are great parks and other outdoor recreation areas up here! (Morgantown/West Virginia University area.) I know down south they have the New River Gorge Bridge, and "Bridge Day" where you can do base jumping and stuff like that, along with kayaking and camping, stuff like that.
