Large raindrop sizes are typically caused by fine particles in the air (such as smoke), or by very high humidity in the air through which the raindrops are falling. The particles cause water to coalesce around them, and raindrops can absorb additionaly water from the humid air. Conversely, smaller raindrops result from very clean and dry air.
