Are you willing to order from an online source? Because there are a lot of great games available online that usually aren't available from Walmart, Target, Toys R Us, etc. I have a game group that I've been playing with for years and we order almost all our games. I'd recommend Ticket to Ride, Alhambra, Settlers of Catan (all medium-weight, some strategy, some luck), and Apples to Apples and Time's Up (light party games). Dunno how new it is, but I like Settlers. Song has intoroduced me to it. When we do that sushi thing I will have him bring it.
