I have fairly old carpet but I'm stuck with it as I'm renting! Everything is always covered in dust and both my kids have asthma and allergies! I'm a single mom and I work lots so I don't have a lot of spare time! Help! Or one of you guys could come clean my house, lol!

I bought a Holmes ionic air purifier not too long ago and it has considerably reduced the amount of dust in my bedroom. I run it 24 hours a day. It's extremely quiet and actually can reduce some of the ambient noise from outside so it helps me sleep, too (bonus!).

I also recommend vacuuming once a week. Use a bagless vacuum that has a hepa filter, which minimizes the amount of dust you kick around. Pick one day each week that works best with your schedule to do this, so it becomes a normal part of your routine that day.

The Swiffer dusters are also good for a "quick" dust-removal fix if you need to. Those things pick up dust off of furniture like magic.

Another thought. Most apartment complexes replace carpets once the previous tenant has moved out. At a minimum, they're supposed to bring in a carpet cleaning company to clean the carpets before the next tenant moves in. That may not be the case where you live. Therefore, if all of the above don't work, you might want to mention your situation to your property manager to see if there is anything that can be done.

We removed the rugs from my daughter's room and it helped. Ask the landlord if you can remove the carpeting. Dust mites wreck havoc with those that have allergies and asthma.

According to my allergist , a clean bare floor is a better environment than carpet for kids with those conditions.

If you have the windows open during the day, close them before night time. Pollen and dust cling to the screens, and when the night temperatures fall, the wind blows the contaminants into the rooms. You can also buy an air cleaner that removes small particles. Or run the AC on low to clean out the room.

Take a single saturday with your kids to shampoo the carpet. I recommend Amway Carpet & Upholstery Shampoo and the gadget to apply the shampoo... it works miracles and makes your apartment smell like fresh lemons. Go to www.quixtar.com to buy if in N. America, otherwise email me and I'll find out how you can get it.

Afterwards, buy a feather duster and make the habit of taking 5 mins to dust surfaces. Also, take 15 mins daily to vacuum spots that are walked on every day (hallways, shoe rack, under the dining table, under the desk, area where you sit down and watch TV). Don't forget to shine your sink each night before bed!

Get yourself the BEST air filter for your AC.You want at least a10 to 12 micron, or what is called a "MERV 10 or MERV 12"If you do not have a good capturing source, I.E.. your AC filter,You will be constantly recirculating dust.If you afford to upgrade your vac.I would ALSO get a vacuum with a HEPA filter in it too.TRUST me,I'm asthmatic too and I have 2 cats. The air in my place is like a hospital.
