Yes, everything conducted on company time can come under scrutiny. Cars parked on company property can be searched, lunch boxes can be searched, restrictions on phone use for personal time and types of baggage brought into the company.

This isn't a result of 911 - it's to prevent corporate espionage and unproductive employees.

All these recent articles in the news about HP's efforts to ferret out a company informant will highlight just how far a company can go to protect itself.

If you're using the corporate email system, it's 100% legal for your employer to view your email, and it's also not very hard. I work with a software that, all I have to do is set up a list of words I want monitored and every night it sends me copies of anyone's email who has that word in it. I can also use it to look at anyone's entire mailbox for any given day/week/month and I can still see the mail after they delete it.

When you go to work, you should have no expectation of privacy on the computer systems.

Anything that happens on company "property" is company business.

This used to mean just the physical space, but has expanded to include cyberspace as well.

If you are using the company computer or bandwidth to read your personal email, then they can still access it.
