Ariana took 2 h longer to drive 360 mi on the first day of a trip than she took to drive 270 mi on the second day. If her speed was the same on both days, what was the driving time each day?

Let's write this is an equation:
speed = distance/time
t = time on day 2
s = speed

s = 360 / (t+2) (because it took 2 extra hours)
s = 270 / t

If A = B and B = C, then A = C.

360 / (t+2) = 270 / t
Multiply out the bottom half of each fraction:
360 * t = 270 * (t+2)
360t = 270t + 540
90t = 540
t = 6 (so day 1 was 8 hours, solution!)

Check:
360 / 8 = 45
270 / 6 = 45 (check!)

Formula: Distance=Rate x Time

it would be helpful if you would classfiy the information or given in a table

1st day, D= 360 mi, R= x , T= t+2
2nd day, D= 270 mi, R=x , T=t

remember the formula....D=RT

if you derive another formula to get R (rate) you would get....Rate=Distance/Time. Since Rate is the same....Distance/Time would also be the same.

the solution would go like this:

360 mi / t+2 = 270 mi / t

cross-multiplying....you would get

360t= 270t + 540
90t = 540
t=6

therefore...in the first day she traveled, 8 hours and for the second day, she traveled 6 hours

hope you understood my explanation and solution.
hope my answer is correct

I think it took 8 hours for the 360 miles because I figured her speed out to 45 mph and divided that by 360 which = 8; and then divided 270 miles by 45mph and got 6 hours. i figured out the mph by subtracting 360 from 270 which = 90 and divided that by the 2 hours. hope its right!! I took algebra in highschool and college, so i hope i remembered something!!!

depends on the road, traffic, wether conditions and what her speed was
