From Latin word Puppis. The rear deck of a ship above the steerage. Sorry..."crapping" and other references have nothing to do with the name.

It comes from the Latin puppis meaning stern. So the poop deck is the aft deck of a ship.

The only place to take a dump during the days of sail was located next to the bowsprite up near the focsail. Hence the term."poopdeck" :)
