I saw the movie the Exorcist the day it opened. Waited in a long line that was wrapped around the block in Westwood. I remember people walking out; it was frightening! I thought I was going to puke and went to the lobby for a few minutes. To this day I can't even hear the commercial! We ( a group) went even though our parents told us not to! Now, the question...

I definitely remember that friends who saw it after us (the next week) did not see the version we saw. It was edited almost immediately. I think they talked about the edit on the news; at that time this movie was big news. I think one of the scenes removed was Blair crawling like a spider or something and some other disturbing stuff. Does anyone remember the editing and the controversy surrounding the movie?

The re-release has restored footage of Regan "spider walking" down the stairs. Creepiest thing I've ever seen in a movie. They had a gymnast who actually did it - they talk about it in the documentary on the DVD. But that part was never released in the film at all - it was considered just too disturbing.

I remember the controversy very well - the whole country went on a "possession jag" that summer. I wasn't allowed to see it at the time - I would have been in 8th grade or so - so I don't remember edits. But the way movies are distributed, there wouldn't have been time for them to create a whole new edit and have it in theaters around the country only a week later.

Maybe your friends had their hands over their eyes - I would have if I'd gotten to see it in the actual theater! :-D

The only thing I can remember regarding Blair crawling like a spider was in the re-release a few years ago. Apparently they added some scenes that were originally cut from the film. It is very creepy. She crawls either up or down the stairs just like a spider. The way her arms and legs are bent is almost humanly impossible. I'm sure you can get that version at any video store. Good Luck!
