Because I am a great believer in trying to lure children away from computers, games boys, TVs etc, I think a nice day out, maybe to the zoo or the railway museum, or any of the London museums would make an excellent present that he will enjoy and remember. Take a lot of photos of the day for future enjoyment and keep the day alive.

if you are asking so you are not a mum of that boy. In that case be careful and don't get expensive stuff because after you may regret that. racing car, magnetic constructor or a new film on the DVD or video (you have to check before what is more suitable). No books or clothes -that's for sure

I have a son who recently turned nine and he is into electronics so we got him a playstation 2 with a couple of games. We also took him to the local Putt-Putt. Oh and I know all boys like yucky stuff like slime or The Mad Scientist CAndy Making Kit. Anything messy.

My kids always gave me an idea of what they wanted well before their birthday. They still do.

Otherwise get him something to do with whatever he's into at the moment.
