I'm into Networking Marketing and so far it's been phenomenal. I would not do anything different get with a company who has a proven track record. It's what you put into it. Treat it as if it's your company. You get out what you put in and Hard Work equals Big Money.

MLM is better defined as sham than scam, sham meaning "something that is not what it purports to be". The problem is not the actually design as much as it is the people in MLM purporting what it can be. You see, people in MLM telling you that you can be making X amount of ridiculous dollars in a short span are either deliberately deceiving you to get you in their downline or naively convinced that they too will make big dollars one day.
On the basis, anyone can sell a product in a massive amount and make a lot of money. If you can find an MLM company and a sell millions of dollars of product a year and make hundreds of thousands of dollars then there is nothing wrong with that. The reality is that the MLM products are nearly all over priced (because they have to pay layers and layers of distributors adding no value to the sale) and/or are products that are abnormal and unable to move on the open market where the bulk of all products are sold. So, while you could theoretically sell yourself enough MLM product to become rich, that means little in terms of the MLM promises. You could feasibly sell enough lemonade in the front of your house to become rich, but you also know the reality is that it would not be a smart business and the odds of you making millions are nearly nil. The same can be said for MLM.
The sham part of MLM is that you have people who are not making money telling you that you can easily make all sort of money. They use propaganda lines that they either take for granted or deceivingly use to get you in their downline. Of course, many of these people will tell you they are in fact making all sorts of money, but will refuse to prove it. MLM is the only business on the planet where "due diligence" is an insult. Buying into any other business on the planet you have a chance to do your due diligence and analyze the numbers. In MLM when you ask to do this, the numbers are suddenly private and they tell you that you don't ask to see your bosses paycheck. Suddenly they use a comparison to a job instead of a business, a classic MLM switch-a-roo to get around the truth. They will tell you that there are people making money but are never able to prove it. There are people living well who are in MLM but you will never find evidence that money came from MLM.
It is possible to sign up repeated people and have your downline grow into enough size to make a good quick buck off of the downline, but because downlines need to continue to grow geometrically, it is impossible to sustain and anyone professing you can earn residual dollars (repeated payments for earlier efforts) is either hiding the truth or was naive enough to not due the math for themselves. The fact is, even if you use a 2 by 2 matrix, within 30 levels you are into the billions and that is not sustainable. The people coming in at the bottom need to have the same opportunity to grow their downlines in order to continue growing, and once they do not, they will not stick around merely to support their upline. So, even in the perfect MLM system, once it grows large enough, it will crumble under its sheer size. The system is flawed on that basis primarily.
Watch out for the MLMer who defines anyone who points out the MLM flaws as negative and uneducated...this is the taught mentality in MLM. It sure it smart to avoid negative people, but people who analyze a business opportunity and find fault are not automatically negative people (unless you think positive people should love every opportunity they see...aka naive) It would be close minded to think that way (which most MLMers will do).
The truth, you can make some bucks in MLM, but the majority of what you hear MLMers tell you is a complete sham. Analyze it for yourself with an open mind and any intelligent person will come to the same conclusion.

It depends on your status in the overall chain actually.
If you join early, you succeed.
If you are a part of a long chain, you get peanuts. Only such people say its a scam. I am one of them!
