pop has already eaten itself. if we think about the emergence of pop music in the 1960s, when the beatles and suchlike took the mainstream from dean martin, sinatra and co, it was all very new and groundbreaking and quite frankly rather brilliant. 50 years later and it is a different story altogether. the POP music of today is such an incestuous mess ( from a musical standpoint, chord progressions have been used again and again and one might be able to finish lyrics off without hearing them due to the sheer preidictability of the words nowadays) that it can only become more dismal than it already is.
On the flipside of the coin, there are thousands of musicians/groups that are pushing the boundaries in music so that we can evolve, but until the media stops forcefeeding the ignorant public with incestuous POP music there will be no change.
In conclusion, i think pop has already eaten itself and passed itself out the other end numerous times over, but unfortunately the masses continue to consume it, oblivious to the rancid taste it leaves behind, and blissfully ignorant to the aural pleasure awaiting them if they just look below the surface.

It already has. It all sounds the same these days and no one is coming up with anything original. It's all about sex and lust, its all about how one pop artist dislikes another, its all bland. I also have trouble respecting bands in which only one person gets any credit. Thats terrible. I can understand singers getting more attention, but not full credit.
Here is something I wrote about radio and what it forces people to put up with:
Radio plays only the most popular music, which has been “market tested to death,” steadily putting nails in the coffin of originality. Anyone who has laid ears on popular music could not disagree. If music were a Mexican dish, popular music would be the bad guacamole with which it would be top-fortied; common, bland and forced upon everyone. It is the stuff hidden beneath the guacamole that contains the flavor and spice that makes such a dish enjoyable. Unfortunately, too few are willing to grab to the spork and push off the bad guacamole. This may be because so few have learned the difference between good and bad guacamole; but whatever the reason, people blame the corporation for serving only bad guacamole.
