It varies. If I receive several gifts at a time (like at Christmas), I open them a bit faster, but not like a maniac. It's nice to also watch and see what other people are unwrapping and how they react to their gifts.
If it's a single gift and I'm the only one receiving something, I'll take a bit longer to get into the package. I want to show the person who gave me the present how much I appreciate their thoughtfulness and the time they took took to wrap it. And if the giver is someone very special to me, I'll savor the process even more so . . .

If I like the paper, I tear waaaaay slow. Otherwise it's slow coz I'm not that good at tearing into gifts. Short stubby fingers, no fingernails to speak of, never grew up opening a bunch of gifts to get me in that greedy habit of tearing into tons of them....

If the giver is here, and I know it's going to be something awful,I prolong the agony, try to think of what to say and take a day in opening in. Anything else and I shred the wrapping to bits within seconds. I hope we're not related and we meet on Christmas day....you know my method now !

Rip it open. Now that you brought this up I think its rude of the gift giver to ask you to open it carfully because they want to reuse the paper and bow. (maybe it just happens to me but it drives me crazy). So i rip it anyway.

when i am opening something from my grandmother or her friends (like for my babyshower), i open things slowly, and compliment the paper. i think it shows respect for them. if its from my friends, i just rip it open (that is, if they wrap it in the first place)......
