i assume you're talking about for when you first start the game.

first, don't worry about the town, or the people. you'll have plenty of time for that later.

for your first crops, you only want like 1 turnip plot, 1 cucumber, and 1 potato. even that much will be very taxing on your energy.

the cucumber will be used to get kappa's berry, do not sell any of them til you get this berry.

the first thing you should buy, besides a few seeds, is the bigger rucksack.

look around the woods and mountains for things to ship for money. the same things will be there every day through-out spring, so after you find them once, you'll know where they'll be at next time
