Well, I guess the answer about letting some of it out is probably accurate in most cases. If they bottled it up in the back, it would smell up the whole place.
Hopefully, architectural design will take that into consideration for future restaurants and businesses that allow some smoking. Fortunately I live in a city that does not allow smoking in restaurants, and am always somewhat shocked when I am out of town and stumble into a restaurant that does allow it. I usually stumble right out again, if possible. I have sneezing attacks when I encounter smoke.
Just yesterday, went into a small restaurant to get some take out food, and the only other customer was sitting at a table, smoking, as far away from where I sat to wait on the food as possible. I still started the sneezing. It went on for a long time. She kept saying "bless you". Clueless.

In short: if the no smoking signs were displayed at the entrance, very few customers will walk into restaurant, once they see no smoking they will walk out. But if the no smoking area is away from the entrance people will just walk in.

I guess they keep the smoking area in the front so that some of the smoke will go out the front door. I've wondered this myself.

Because the smoking area is usually in the FRONT of the restaurant so as to provide adequit circulation for the smoke to be exhumed fromt he restaurant!...
and the FRONT usually gets filled up first

Because if people were honest with themselves, they'd admit that smoking is really cool and they wish they were doing it.

Quit whining. You should be honored that they let a complainer like you into their restaurant.

That's the way they were built. Don't sweat it, you're going to die anyway. It's inherent to birth.
