Not all Bhuddists are peace loving. In Sri Lanka there have been attacks on Christian churches by Bhuddists. Religion isn't the problem. People are the problem. Even with out religion people kill thousands of other people; Stalin and Pol pot to name but two.

Just think about it this way...

Do you remember the rebellion, the aggression, the general show-off you were during your teens?
Chances are you have mellowed right?

What is true for people is also true for religions.

Buddhism predates Christ; and I personally consider Buddhism as a reformation movement of Hinduism that's much much older. These religions have had their excesses (yes, people did kill for Buddhism - See the history at Ang Khor for example) but now, mostly Buddhism has evolved an its teachings more focused on love and understanding. The same applies for Hinduism although there are a few fanatics everywhere.

Christianity on the other hand is around 2000 years old. Islam is around 1300 years old.

Guess what Christians were doing when Christianity was 1200 years old? Well, it was the crusades... Brandishing the sword and killing in the name of their God. Sounds familiar?

Islam is one of the major religions of the world, and it is going through its growing pains. Of course it is not helped by the fact that a large chunk of its adherents are sitting and living on huge reserves of oil that are making the powers that be drool. This confluence of 'religious teenage' and 'greed for resources' is just too bad for us.

If we, as a human race, survive this period, I think most major religions would have gone through their teenage cycle, and we might just have less religious arguments.

Westerners have a very odd , ignorant & unrealistic view of Buddhism. You "cherry pick" (I like that phrase and it is the first time I have used it !)You see it as a panacea because you actually know nothing about it. I'm afraid there are corrupt , greedy & evil people who say they are Buddhists just as there are in Christianity & Islam. What is needed in each religion is constant refreshment of the essentials. If you are truly religious then each day brings an inward revelation of the mercy & humanity of your belief.

Everyone makes mistakes, but it's true: Buddhism is the most peaceful in the world. It really does not depend on religion, but the actual people.
