I haven't been to Vietnam, but I can say that Thailnd is VERY safe, even with the coup.
You'll have a great time, and can see lots in 7 weeks. If you want some info about Chiang Mai, mail me. I lived there for 10 years.

No, good question. Whenever you are in a country that is "poor" you should not wear anything that would flaunt "wealth" and that is relative. Even here in the United States you would be a target. Leave it home in a safe deposit box and enjoy your trip. You two know you are engaged. You probably want a worry free vacation so enjoy. My girlfriend in Bangkok had her purse taken by a motorcycle thief, lost her wallet, cell phone, etc. while waiting for the bus. You have to be wise about traveling. Don't flash money around. Dress like a local, don't dress like a tourist. That can help minimize problems with pick pockets and thieves. I use a money clip and put my spending money in my front pocket so I don't have to reach for my wallet or not even carry a wallet when I travel except when I have to. Keep your passport in the hotel safe or your room safe. Carry a copy of your passport info page and a copy of your visa or entry stamp. If you have problems, that usually will work till they see your passport. Most countries police will accept that till they see the passport.

No. You should never go anywhere with anything of real value. You are a stranger in a strange land. Bear in mind, in many countries, their wealth is very limited and displays of wealth are less than welcome. Dress down, dress simply and leave anything of value at home. ALSO your travel insurance will, no doubt, have a limit of about £250 on any one item. True, some things may be covered on your home contents but even so, the insurance company may ask what the - blank - blank - blank you were doing wandering around Vietnam with a large rock on you finger. You are also obliged to take all reasonable precautions for your personal goods. Flashing a diamond ring in public in a less than rich country is NOT taking reasonable precautions.

I have lived in both places, leave the shiny expensive stuff at home. Your chances of being robbed are 100 percent. If the pick pockets don't get them (and they are very very good) the muggers will (the good news is that the muggers in both countries are non violent if hand over the swag). If you leave them in your hotel room a person will pay the maid to open the door to your room and look the other way while he takes everything of value you left there, including your passport, airline tickets and prescription drugs. Leave expensive stuff and needed stuff including prescription drugs in the HOTEL safe, not the safe in your room. The burgalers just take a crowbar and walk away with the little safes in your hotel room.

I wouldn't. I've been to both countries, thailand many times. They are famous for stealing in veitnam (backpacks out of the train windows when the train slows down) but i didn't have a problem. I also didn't have anything valuable. I thailand sometimes i had no problems, othertimes they stole anything that wasn't stapeled to me. Why take the risk? Also, on a tourist bus to one of the islands NEVER let them put your bag under the bus in a room where someone is going to guard it. Only in the back. Its a free for all, they go through your things, take what they like and there is no way to trace them.

i went to thailand with loads of people and none of us got robbed and we all came back with our sunglasses still so its not at all bad but they are generally poorer so i wouldnt cos if it got knicked you d kinda be asking for it. so it doesnt seem worth it really plus you could attract some real muggers with a diamond ring, if you must wear it put it on a necklace and put it round your neck. oh yeah and dont bother with a bumbag under your shirt i think thats an american thing?!?!. just have a normal bag like everyone else. by the way thailand is the best place in the world you re going to love it

Not safe at all. You don't need to even take it with you. I travelled to Thailand and they like to touch and get into your body space too much. It creeped me out. They will take it from you if they get the opportunity. Just keep a low profile and enjoy the country.

As a rule of thumb i never take valuables when i travel, but i notice lots of tourist flaunt their riches. Remember these are countries that have high poverty levels and to them you are all rich. Use your head and keep your wits and try not to look like a victim.
