It's a redneck thing. It is supposed to symbolize a bull rider but everyone ( in ranching and farming communities) has caught onto it.

I've never seen a cow bell. Where are you from? I have seen a ball sack hanging there, though. I always think those look kinda small considering the size of the truck...

I'm from a farming community (own and operate a farm in Wisconsin) and I've never heard of it. It must be more of a western thing.

This past time is to increase the pleasure and enjoyment of those that do not hang cowbells from whatever. You go to a truck stop with a cow bell and ring it. You then count the number of people who run out to check if it is their vehicle that is being stolen (if you have pictures it will increase our enjoyment immensely). You then report to us, that do not have cow bells, the number. Whoever has the largest number after 2 weeks is the winner and presented with a can of insulation foam. They will then go around and silence all the cow bells. This will enable us (the non cow bellers) to steal all the vehicles with silenced cow bells with no fear of being caught.

It's there for the same reason people wear cowboy boots, or big belt buckles, or cowboy hats. They want you to know they're a farmer.
