We just want something we can call our own. If we didn't we would have nothing for ourselves. The reason chinese, mexicans and filipinos have unity is because they have an alternate language unlike black folks. We all speak english and that is why we do it so badly. We are trying to create our own language that only we understand. That is why a black person talks one way with blacks and another with whites and some have a problem with the translation LOL. That is why we braid our hair and have rap music. (As far as the guy who says that is why I bought a gun. I hope you will eventually use it on yourself because white folks committ suide far more than blacks. I think its because when the goin get too tough you bail out. Black people are used to having life tough and they know in a few months things will be okay.) I love everything (well not everything) black people are innovative and do it just adds so much more to the american society as a whole. Even if white people don't want to admit it. Whitney Houston was like watching a train wreck. If there was no avenue for Whitney no one would even know who she was. I think black people need to calm down that rap music. It is pretty caustic. Think of tv with no Oprah or Raven Symone okay I can imagine tv without raven symone. I love braids because white people can not even imagine the luxury of braids. They think it's too ethnic. (A reminder of something about black people they can't change and make us feel bad about) Didn't call it ethnic when Bo Derek did it had nerves enough to say she started the craze. PALEEZ We have a beautiful culture and we know it. Just enjoy what you like just like anything and enjoy it like you enjoy chinese food, didn't say you had to like their ways.

Well…there is a black culture I like but it’s not exactly African American of U.S. origin. I’m more attracted to the Rastafarian culture of African origin in Jamaica. I enjoy their music (Reggae) and beach culture. It's not violent compared to Rap music. The most famous Rastafarian we know today is the late Bob Marley.

I wish they would drop the "African" thing from "American". When different ethnic groups insist on retaining their motherland's identity, how can we ever hope to be ONE nation, under God?

I think of the three things you mention as being American customs. I've never been to Africa, but I've been around and seen tons of braiding, heard plenty of rap, and feel R&B in my own white bones as much as anyone, I imagine.

Just my opinion....

Those things have nothing to do with culture, which is part of the problem when it comes to race relations. Culture is history, and sadly, most people don't understand it. Culture should teach us that race is moot, that the color of a person's skin is obsolete because that's just skin and skin and there's much more to anyone than a bunch of dead cells holding their insides inside.

Does it totally belong to african americans? I think because it also influences others who live in the USA it is part of our American culture. We're not in Africa, we're americans of the USA. This separating us has gotta stop somewhere.

i do no longer think of that Hip Hop supplies African human beings their way of existence, in spite of the fact that it does play a stable area in it. African American history is wealthy with marvelous historic previous, Poets, Artists, instructors, Inventors, Painters, i ought to circulate on and on...African American way of existence is an an substantial and indispensable area of yankee historic previous, with out it we would be the poorer.
