You need to be a little bit more specfic but I will do my best.
£5500 will buy you a 99-2000 Honda Accord Type-R. Very reliable because it's a Honda. It has a 2.2 litre 209bhp engine that revs all the way to 7500rpm so is also very fast. It also handles extremely well. It is however somewhat lacking in creature comforts and is not what you would call refined. More of a 4 door touring car for the road.
For that budget you could also buy a Golf GTi Turbo. Quite fast with 150bhp but not quite the hot hatch the GTI used to be. Should be reliable though
Also the Seat Leon Cupra. 180bhp so quick enough and although it's badged a Seat it's actually based on the Golf platform. As Seat are now part of the VW Audi group they are also well built and reliable.
Mondeo ST24/ST200. For your budget you could pick up a late old model Mondeo. With a 2.5 V6 the ST24 is a reasonable rapid car and it handles well too. The ST200 is the same just more so. Fords are also reasonably well built these days so it should be ok reliability wise.
For £5500 you might just be able to find a very late BMW E36 328 coupe (E36 was the 3 series made between 1991 and 1999). With a 193bhp 2.8 litre straight 6 it's both fast and smooth. Reasonably reliable though not as bullet proof as you'd think. You could also get a high milage later model (E46) 328 saloon for a similar budget although you won't get anyhting with less than 100k on the clock unless you find a real bargain.
It all depends on what you mean by fast. My dad thinks his 1,6 Astra is fast, because his last one was only a 1.4. If a normal 2.0 saloon would be quick enough then something like an Accord 2.0 se, or a Passat 1.8 Turbo would probabaly also fit the bill. Out of the ones I have listed the Accord Type-R is the fastest and definatly the most involving to drive. I myself would look for a late 99 plate 328 coupe though since it is almost as quick as the Honda but is a lot more comfortable. The only downside is BMW servicing aint cheap. If money is an issue get an ST24 mondeo. Cheap to run and you can pick up a 99-2000 car for less than £5k.

Go foreign such as toyota, nissan, honda find the lowest mileage in that year that you can find and as with any car have a mechanic take a look at it. foreign cars are snappy and they last a long time such as the Timex watch they take a lickin and keep on tickin.
I have had my nissan for 5 years now its a 1998 and i have never had any problems with it. My mother had a nissan we had that for aprox 8 years or more it had over 200,000 miles on it and it still ran like a top with no major problems and it was rolled, hit a deer, and a truck hit it and it was slammed into a light pole she looked bad but she ran good..lol. My mother now has a Toyota shes had it about 2 years and no problems its a 1997.
The only thing you have to worry about is IF it ever does break down your going to pay out the butt for parts to get it fixed cause parts are spendy for foreign cars. Out of the 6 foreign cars we have owned one was a lemmon but after everything was fixed it ran good..lol.
So happy shopping and take your time to find the right one.

Forget the new stuff, get a 1994 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo. They are a LOT faster than any newish car you could buy for that price, 0-60 in 4.9 Seconds. 6 months ago I took my car to a track day (never again!!) and one of those gave me a real run for my money, and mine is a Noble M12 GTO. Spoke to the driver after as well and he insisted it was not modified.

You can buy a more reliable car for less than that amount, it takes time to shop for a car of your preference, do not jump on the first deal someone makes with you. Look in your local paper ask some friends if they know of someone. BB

for 5500, you'd have to go with a Ford or Chrysler product. You arent gonna touch a Toyota, Nissan or Honda (in good shape) for that. I don't know what the English market is like, but the american market is that way now that I've seen that you are talking pounds and not dollars.....gotta remember most americans are sleeping....now I feel stupid, anyway thanks for the points, it would have been a good answer for an american heh heh

depends what you mean by fast.
I have a 2002 MG ZS 1.8 - current book value about £4k
this is the model that MG/Rover used as their rally car (unmodified). It is claimed that it tops out at over 110 mph (though of couse, mine has never gone faster than 69 mph).
It's never caused me any $hit mechanically.

Don't touch french cars they are to expensive to maintain,go for toyota as thay rarely breakdown and are relatively cheap to insure, the corolla is a very good bet as it is fairly cheap to buy and service.
