A lot of good answers here. I think the point is that everyone does have a story even (if its just their autobiography) but not everyone's an author. It requires a writer to relay a story. So all of you budding authors ... if you don't have an interesting story of your own, nor the imagination to dream one up .... write someone else's. I have been a writer since my teens. I never had a problem finishing books but I flirted with many genres. Horror came most naturally but I outgrew it. Finally I settled on legal fiction to make use of my knowledge and imagination. As a lawyer I have a wealth of practical experience (not just my own) to ensure accuracy but I like to create my own characters and I am busy writing a book now. Maybe this is the bestseller in me.Thanks to all of you for answering and I hope this question inspired someone somewhere to release the book in them too.

Everyone has a book in them but whether they make anything of it is another thing. Most people don't. Only 3% or something of would-be novelists actually succeed in completing their novel. It takes commitment and consistent dedication to writing to achieve a final coherent result, i.e a novel

Everyone has a story in them, but not everyone has the inclination or the talent to put it onto paper effectively.
I still plan to write the great Canadian novel one day! I've only written a novella, some short stories & several poems so far. Had a few poems published. But lately I'm writing songs (I play acoustic guitar & sing...)
The great thing about writing is that you can do it at any age. I could be 85 yrs old & write a novel! So there's still plenty of time. It would have to be factual. For me, writing is therapy. I write from my experience. I think a writer has to write what they know. That way it's passionate & honest & rings true.

Probably one of those depressing Russian tragedy's where not even the hero gets out of it alive.
Oh, I'm sorry, I originally thought you meant what the genre of the story of my life would be. My error. I have attempted to write a romance, and Sci-Fi, and fantasy. Maybe I could write a Sci-Fi Harlequin Romance with Hogwarts characters riding dragons on a mail route between Pern and Darkover? Except that you would have to be a really good author to carry that off.

Of course everyone has a book in them. The trouble is that some people have 'Great Expectations' and some people have 'Mr Bump goes to the park'.
I would (and have often though about) write a book about my life growing up in my evolving extended family. It would be factual to the best of my knowledge, but it would probably be seen as fictional. Briefly, 'hilights' would include Suicide, Abandoned children, bankruptcy, fraud, mental health issues, alcoholism.
The list goes on.

If you ever discuss with someone your story writing plans and experiences, others will get annoyed, butt in, say that you are pretentious, etc. Sadly, the vast majority are unimaginative conformity clad zombies. Very doubtful if they have a book in them - certainly not of any worth to people that like to read.
My brain is a cauldron of outlandish, humorous, violent, imaginative and heterodox thoughts. I tend to enjoy writing Science Fiction, horror or comic fiction (or an amalgam of the three).

True, but getting the book out of them is another story. Mine is struggling to get out and, if it ever gets finished, will be fiction on the surface but drawing on my own experiences throughout. I'm not sure this is the best idea but it's the only way it seems to work for me right now.

One day I'd love to write both real literature that would count as one of the classics and women's literature as well. Right now I'm working on a story that would belong to the latter category and it's amazing how I can use completely ordinary things I hear or see as I'm walking homewards from school.

False, most people cannot construct ideas in a strucutured way.
Jsut read YA to see how bad the "office" section of our society is. Then when you average this out with the rest of the polulation you realise the average is somewhere below sea level.
