marmite is made from yeast extract and is thick and brown in colour-also sticky and has an odd smell. the main ingredients of Marmite are yeast extract, with lesser quantities of sodium chloride (common salt), wheatgerm extract, niacin, thiamine, spice extracts, riboflavin, and folic acid. the spread is also a rich source of the vitamin B complex; vitamin B12 is not naturally found in yeast extract, but is added to Marmite during manufacture.

Marmite is a British savoury spread made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing. It is a sticky, dark brown paste with a distinctive, powerful taste that polarises consumer opinion and prompts its advertising slogan that you either "love it or hate it". It is similar to Australia's Vegemite, Promite and Marmite—which is the name of a different, though similar, product (see below)—and Switzerland's Cenovis, and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Marmite is okay.

Thick, black, salty tar to spread on toast, or melt in hot water for a drink.

But Bovril is better.

It is a canned (tinned) black tar-like substance that is yeast based. It is used in UK as a spread for bread, etc. I have never had it, being an American. but I hear it is an acquired taste.
