Will history repeat itself?
Was it lust, complacency, lack of military power, pride, or something else or due to a host of reasons?

arrogance. thinking that nothing could go wrong and therefore stopping to pay attention to things. forgetting to maintain infrastructure. forgetting to invest in education. letting crime grow unchecked. spending all the money on waging wars, ever more expensive and ever less successful. letting incompetents lead the place, taking dumb decisions and digging a huge financial hole.

it is my view that large bits of the West are, indeed, in a phase of decadence. Think of emerging shantytowns around most major cities (be it in Europe or in the US), rising crime rates, the US spending 100bn in Iraq when the schools are getting worse each year, huge budgetary deficits all around, in general (much) lower educational standards, etc.

whether this is just a short phase due to last a few decades, or whether this is just the beginning of a much larger, major decadence that will last hundreds of years, I don't know.

There are many reasons. Also by asking that question do you mean Nations that have fallen or do you mean people having to abandon their native lands and go to another place. The Greek empire fell but civilization did not. The roman empire fell but the civilization did not. The Incas vanished and their civilization did disappear of moved to another place. Every thing is in the process of change all the time.

Hubris tends to be the common denominator in all civilizations. Greek, Roman, Babylonian, French and English aristocracies, Napolean, the dynasties in China, the leadership of Japan in the early 20th century...I could continue with an infinite list of dynastic empires falling due to the perceived greatness and false righteousness of their leaders. Even the Bible, the Torah, the historical writings of Hindus all speak of leaders that basically starting doing whatever pleased them (hedonism) and to hell with the populace (ever heard..."let them eat cake").

The reason is varied. For others, it is because they have let their greed and hunger for power overcome them. And then it also depends on the leader or ruler of that civilization. Some leaders are irresponsible and they only focused in gaining wealth. Others are really innocent. It's just that other civilization or other groups envy them. While for others, well they are destined to collapse.

the roman empire collapsed, basically, because it got too big. it covered so much land & was basically enforced by its conquered peoples. so, it was just too large to be controlled by one ruler, empire, etc. the country kept being ambushed and attacked by other peoples, which ended up breaking down the empire slowly. one of the main reasons why rome kept expanding itself was the need for each ruler to out-do the one before him. it was all one large domino effect in the end...

It's society falling prey to the entitlement philosophy. People who lived the last fifty years of any great society never knew what it was like to go without, and thus were not willing to give all of themselves to make the society work.

that question cannot be answered in the historical sense within the constraint of this text box, but the mathematical probability that everything will end increases with every passing second, so as time moves towards infinity, everything is possible.
