I'm 24 and have been irregular since I started menstrating at 15. But in the past year I have been getting it less and less. Recently I didn't get my period in like 6 months, until a month and a half ago when it did come...but it only last 2 days and was brown.
My mum says it's because I don't eat right and I work overnight, so my body can't function properly. Not sure if this is true or not...Any advice? Should I switch to the day shift?
Only reason why I haven't been to the doctor's is because everytime I go, they tell me the same thing: We need to put you on the pill. But I refuse. I am a smoker aswell.

You sound exactly like me - I also waited 6 months once. In fact, at one stage I used to have a period exactly the same time as my dog - her season was a reminder for me to go out for some 'supplies'! You more than likely have a hormonal imbalance which is extremely common. All the pill does is regulate your period, if you go off the pill they will only go back to being irregular. I hate taking the pill, it makes me nutty and my breasts grow even bigger, which isn't welcomed. A few years ago I found out I had polycystic ovaries which is quite possilby causing the irregularities in my periods. Loads of my friends have this condition too - nothing too serious - some say they struggle to conceive as they never know when they are ovulating but my friends and I conceived fine no problem.
In your case I'd suggest you request a blood test by your doctor just to check the cause - and eat loads of fresh fruit and veg. that helps me without a doubt - didn't believe it until I tried it.

Hi, I also have suffered with this and more than anything, it's annoying isn't it? You just don't know where you stand. Are you very underweight? Because that can be a big issue in it, if you have 4% or less body fat then they usually stop all together. Your mom may be right about the eating then.
I really think that you should go and see another doctor, or a nurse, they may be more helpful, because it really can't be good for you. I know you don't want to go on the pill, but you could get a coil inserted, that also helps to regulate them and you don't have to bother about it for 5 years! It's also a great contraceptive for when you need one. Good luck X

I have your same problem .. Mine is directly related to stress causing the hormones to go haywire and periods to be missed
Have your doctor check you for
Menstruation - amenorrhoea
Amenorrhoea means the absence of the menstrual period. Apart from during childhood, pregnancy, breastfeeding or menopause, the absence of the menstrual period may indicate a problem with the reproductive system. One of the most common causes of amenorrhoea is hormonal disturbance. The interplay of female sex hormones can be disrupted by a wide range of events, including diseases of the reproductive organs, weight loss, emotional stress or overexercising. Frequently, there is no worrying cause found.
Over here in Australia its really strange the GYN's do a ultra sound of your womb. My Doctor found me to have a thick lining and gave me a prescription for a drug called "primolut n " which worked as soon as I finished the script.
I don't think your shift work has anything to do with it but more what sort of stress you may have in your life..
go see your doctor ... the pill may not be the thing for you but hey its worth it to check with him
All the best

See a different doctor and if you're not happy demand a second opinion. There's no way a decent doctor would 'force' anyone onto the pill esp as you are a smoker. I know its annoying but sometimes you just have to keep going back to see different docs until one of them actually bothers to listen to you, as an individual. I'd also recommend seeing an alternative healthy practitioner and get a different point of view

Some people never have regular periods. Birth control pills would help you regulate your period, but you smoke so im not sure how your body would react to them since they say not to smoke with them. but if you dont have a problem with your irregular period, then i think your ok. it has nothing to do with you working the night or day shift. it might even be a stress problem. who knows! women's bodys are CRAZY!
