uninstall yahootoolbar from add/remove programs.
Go to internet options in controlpanel.
Click on programs tab and click on manageaddons, Disabled the yahoo toolbar.
Go to advanced tab and uncheck "use 3rd party browser toolbars".
The issue will be fixed.

I'm having the same problem and I think it is related to the Yahoo Toolbar. Do you have a toolbar? See if you can run Windows Update - it was opening IE for me without the toolbar. You can hit stop to stop loading the page. Go to the View menu and go to Toolbars. Check the Yahoo Toolbar and see if it causes the page to close. For what it's worth, I am using an older version of the Toolbar (Yahoo Companion) since the newer one doesn't show up for me. I know this doesn't answer your question, but maybe it will help us get to the bottom of it. Good luck!
