Aspects

Aspects measure significant angles between planets and points in a chart. Astrologers use aspects to understand how these different factors blend together. Aspects are measured in longitude, the position of a planet in the Zodiac's 360 degree circle. Planets are considered to be in aspect with one another if they fall within a certain number of degrees of the precise aspect angle. This allowance is called the "orb" and may differ from astrologer to astrologer. There are two broad categories of aspects called "hard" and "soft." The hard aspects indicate challenges to be met in life. The soft aspects indicate where qualities flow together easily. The following is a list of major aspects. Some astrologers use additional aspects, or divisions of the Zodiac, which are called "minor aspects."

CONJUNCTION Angle: Zero degrees (like a New Moon). Hard or soft depending upon the planets involved. Planets in the same place. Reinforcement of planetary qualities; a concentration of influence. Potential for new birth.

OPPOSITION Angle: 180 degrees (like a Full Moon, division of the circle by 2). A hard aspect which has two planets facing one another. This can indicate polarization, separation of the two functions or projection of one of the planets on others. The opposition, though, can also bring awareness through objectivity (seeing both sides).

SQUARE Angle: 90 degrees (division of the Zodiac by 4) Also semisquare and sesquiquadrate (45 and 135 degrees or 1/8 and 3/8 of the Zodiac circle). The square "family" of hard aspects spotlights challenge or tension and a need for changes symbolized by the planets, houses, and signs involved. Development, construction, commitment, turns in the road or roadblocks. Squares are arguably the most difficult of all the aspects.

TRINE Angle: 120 degrees (division of the Zodiac by 3). A soft aspect indicating a smooth flow of events and a clarity of vision with respect to the planets, houses, and signs involved. Confidence. Harmony. Creativity.

SEXTILE Angle: 60 degrees (division of the Zodiac by 6). A soft aspect similar to a trine, lacking some of the vision, but more work-oriented, bringing clarity, drive and facilitating communication.

QUINCUNX or INCONJUNCT Angle: 150 degrees (5/12 of the Zodiac) A moderately hard aspect indicating obligation, reorganization. Adjustments, as symbolized by the planets, houses, and signs involved.Incongruity. Fence-sitting.

Long ago when people looked up in the night sky they noticed that there are 12 constellations that always appeared at the same time of the year that the sun and moon moved through at regular intervals. Then they noticed several wandering stars "the planets" that traveled through the same constellations. They started assigning each constellation with certain traits (i.e. Aries = I am, Taurus = I have, etc..) and the sun, moon, and each wanderer with control over a certain part of human personality (i.e. Mercury = communication, Venus = love, etc...) as they perceived them by observing persons with these traits based on their birth and also what was going on for each day with where the Sun, Moon, and wanderers were each major occurrence. From this Astrology was born.

If you are interested in learning more about Astrology there are tons of books out there but they are usually very math and science heavy.

Way back when, people noticed that throughout the year, the sun (as seen from earth) passed directly through twelve constellations and spent about the same amount of time in each one. Other planets were later added in as well--the classical astrological structure examines the positions of the sun, the moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. (Planets and asteroids discovered later are sometimes factored in now as well, but for hundreds upon hundreds of years if was just these seven.)

Astrology is a science based on the Law of Karma and how this Law is enforced.

Most of us are here on this material world from a very long time. The soul keeps passing from one body to another. The law of karma states that you are responsible for your work and would get results according to your work. But these results are not instantaneous.
We keep on working either Good or Bad or Both. And hence more and more result starts accumulating and piling up. Most of us have acquired results from many ages.
Now there is a system made by God by which these results or karma of each individual are recorded and enforced. The demigods who are servants of Supreme Lord carry out this enforcement. Astrology is the science of reading this records and symptoms.

However what Karma or results we get (either good or bad) is also decided by our current activity. For example if you are destined to live for say 70 years but you kill your Body. Then you will die but have to live as ghost for the rest of the time until another body is awarded. You may be destined to do become a King, but if your current activity is robbery you may become temporarily, a mere rich thief. You may be destined to Die but if you are engaged in service of God, You may be forgiven and given just a small accident instead of Death.
Krishna himself tells in Bhagavad Gita
“Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.” (BG 18.66)
Hence the previously recorded Destiny can be changed and Still astrologers are not to be blamed for reading the Old recordings :).
An Intelligent person would however endeavor to engage in Proper work or Service of God, Knowing that the astrological forecast can be completely changed by current Karma or forgiveness from God.
