Your boy's the same age as my son. Here's what my boy likes:
gymini -- I change out the dangling toys
bouncey seat with music and lights
swing with music and lights
mobile -- he loves it!
Next toy I'm going for is an exersaucer.
But, what my son REALLY likes, is when I take him to the playground. He loves to watch the older kids run and play. Often I sit him on my lap, or I'll walk with him facing out.
Good luck.

There are tons of good suggestions above. Little toys from the baby section of the store, play yards, lights, music, sometimes just getting down and playing with them on the carpet is enough. Show them their toes, play with their fingers. But also realize that baby has a very short attention span and will often break eye contact when they want to rest. Sometimes it's not boredom, it's tired. If you do activities with him, make sure they only last a few minutes and if he shies away or isn't interested, don't push.

You are the best toy for him at this age. But I know what you mean about him being bored. They do have short attention spans. Anything bright colored that lights up and plays music.
Remember, no toys small enough that they would fit into a toilet paper tube because the baby could choke.

From experience if it has lights, music and annoying they will play with it for hours. My daughter also hated being on her back and belly all the time so I sat her in a walker with toys on it. (she didn't move or anything) she loved that and would do that for a while. then there is the play time with you where they aren't only playing they are learning. I think that is the best time and I play with my baby girl all the time. My son is 7 and I still get down and play and teach him new things also. But this is just my suggestion.

Just go to the baby section, there will be a ton there. Bright colored rubbery plastic rattles, those fake little plastic key chains, plastic books with bright pictures that he can't tear up. Anything like that that is bright, but that will hold up to him putting them in his mouth. Also, read and talk to him. Even though he can't understand the story, the rhythms and sounds of you reading are good for his development. And when you are going about your household chores, talk to him, narrate what you are doing, even if you feel silly doing it. And get him out at least once a day to see and hear and smell different things.
Don't stick him in front of the tv except for about 30 minutes a day. Watching tv, even "educational" shows or DVD's, actually dulls the thinking and imagination process.

Are you sure he is bored? It could be the early signs of a developmental problem. Make sure the doctor says he is OK because if he is not then he will need help with learning.
You could try toys that he can do things with such as a Busy Box. That way he can manipulate them to his hands.

Basic toys are the best.
i asked my daughter what was the best bit of her summer holidays was, expecting her to say Alton towers, Thorpe park (theme parks if your not English) and other expensive and extremely hard days..... she replied "the days we went to the park mummy; cause i just played games with my mummy and daddy and my friends"
remember back to when you were a kid... all my toys were hand me downs and wooden.... my grandad had made them all....
handmade toys last much longer and the kid then grows up with some imagination. also with unusual toys they will be the only one with that toy... and when your boy grows up, as all kids are, he will be really competitive with 'show and tell' and stuff like that. so contact someone in your family or befriend a local blacksmith/wood worker and your son will thank you when he grows up
(Thanks for the question, its made me reminisce about my childhood and my deformed toys with odd looking eyes!)

Anything with sounds and lots of lights. They have play gyms that are nice. We have a leap frog one. It lights up and has different songs. It can also be used when he gets older and can sit up.
Even putting him in a bouncer seat in front of a TV is ok. He will like the lights and noise. Or play soft music.
