I'm a 50yr old man. I am educated to a degree level, but i have often come across younger people who have been able to tell me more than i know and quite right too. Because people are younger it does not mean they have to take a back seat just because someone else is their elder. Life experience is not always the solution........

I believe age is just a number when it comes to intelligence.
Of course with age comes life experience and we have alot to learn from our parents and grandparents. But many young people have extraordinary ideas and different ways of thinking are becoming known everyday.
I know some highly educated older people who can't even balance a checkbook... People like this I will NEVER take advice from and limit my time spent with them as well.
I know older people who have failed and will continue to fail any test put in front of them, yet they are financially secure, know how to make money and do for others, and live a wonderful life.
On the other hand, I have asked my son and our exchange students what they think about various situations and received a treasure trove of ideas, remedies and input.
I feel older people do not give younger people the chance to show their intelligence. I understand that many portray they are intelligent yet you wouldn't want them to cut out a coupon for you for they probably hurt them selves.
All in all, we each get to distinguish what we find intelligence to be, what suits our individual lives.
Whether young or old we all have a certain unmeasurable amount of intelligence!

Good debate! I feel that as I have got older I have learned so much. When I was 15 I thought I knew it all when infact, I knew nothing. Age does give you life experiance which makes you more world wisely. You come across problems and obstacles that you need to get around and when you have overcome these you are experianced on how to deal with them in the future.
As a matter of intelligence - there are two sides. The first is "actual intelligence" the seconed is "common sense".
ACTUAL INTELLIGENCE comes from reading books, learning and gaining knowledge of subjects which have difinitive answers. There is a right and wrong. You have no choices.
COMMON SENSE is an every day life intelligence which you gain through life experiance. From day to day you must decide what you judge to be right and wrong as there is no difinitive answer. The only way to gain common sense is through experiance of life. Actual intelligence can be gained through learing and studying. I would say someone fresh out of University has more actual intelligence but no common sense in regard to working life.
In conclusion I would say that older people would have more common sense than younger people and younger people have more actual intelligence due to the fact that they have not long ago learned it and it is therefore fresher in their minds. Older people tend to forget things they learned at school as you don't use all of the things you learned there in the real working world.

if you consider intellectual level I thing intelligence in young people is much more than the elder . It is like see your grand father he at his age of 5 would not have ask some intelligent question what your child would have asked you. now a day child has been exposed to lot of world good as well as bad thing . the child is very eager to know & learn new things. His intellectual is grasping fast than the old ones.
if you say experiance and taking decisions it is totally different. it depends on person to person. persons experiance, his knowledge, his views , his thinkings, his conseptions , his decision making, & execution power etc,
so i believe that younger persons are intellegent But desions & conclusions to take up is up to that persons problem & the desiions to give is other persons views. so do what ones feel correct.

Intelligence differ.... I think age is for experience so if we put a 5 years old child to give an advice for something it would be different and not helpeful even if the kid was intelligent. Therefore I don't think age define your intelligence and although it can be a poinless number it still tells you how much you've been through and the word of wise you can contain..

I believe there is no substitute for life experiences. I am now officially retired although I still work with charitable organizations. I have told people many times that college did not prepare me for life in general or make me more intelligent. The true value of college was learning how to do research in order to find answers. Of course the subjects that related directly to my major was crucial.
I believe the young people today are more knowledgeable than the young people of my time. The reason being they have access to more knowledge with the Internet and television. I think it is unfortunate that the young people today seem not to be able to read as well as the young people of my time and once again I contribute that to the Internet and television. Our entertainment came from books and our only source of knowledge was books.
All people would be much wiser if we learn to listen and come to understand we have the possibility to learn from everyone regardless of their social, economic or educational background.

Younger people have less experience. Older people are assumed to be more old fashioned. At the end of the day we can all learn something from each other.

Age is defernatly the experience. If I think back to my teen years, and the advice I try & give my teenage daughter now, I base this totally on the past.
However, there are trends to kids getting smarter, younger, especially in IT / PC arena, where their brains are like sponges & just lap up & retain information, unlike old folks like me!
