Bear in mind that you might have guests from time to time, so a table with a leaf that can extend it to 8 seats may be worth considering.

Look for a finish which is both attractive, not easily damaged and easily repaired if it is damaged. It should, for example, be able to resist a hot dish being placed on it (though, of course, a mat is desirable).

When looking at the table, set 6 chairs round it and try each one. There is nothing more uncomfortable than a leg in the wrong place!

Make sure that the table is of a size (extended) which will fit the room. There should ideally be enough space to walk round the table when people are seated. Also there should be enough space in the centre to accommodate serving dishes.

Your budget sounds relatively modest. It is always worth considering good quality second-hand furniture.

all the answers are good practical advise
i'll just say that beyond enough seating you really need
to look at a dining suit as an investment. you want good quality.
for example if it is made from solid wood or cheap wood veneer
which really makes a difference. also if the finish is a durable lacquer designed for many years of use. chairs are a crucial point and need to be built sturdy...don't be afraid to look up under the chairs and see how they are built. what are the corner blocks made from. with your budget i would go with solid wood and accept no other. veneers often start peeling and cracking off.
the same with laminating. solid wood will be more costly but well worth it in the long run. the type of wood is also important sometimes they will sell you a pine or poplar wood that is finished to look like cherry or oak. it's a trick of the trade. go with the hardwoods for durability like oak, cherry, maple, or if you can get it mahogany. also if you already have a china hutch or buffet try to get a table to match. hope this helps and good luck

Everyone has given excellent advice, so I shan't repeat it all.

I would like to suggest that you consider one more aspect tho.

A table that stands upon a pedestal will give you more seating options than one with a leg at each corner. Think of those Thanksgiving dinners, where you pull in extra chairs from all over the house! Putting someone at a corner, without a leg will make it much more comfortable.

My table is a rather large rectangle, with a double pedestal base and I couldn't be more pleased! It makes it easier to vacuum beneath, as well.

No. We all work different shifts & pass on the doorstep on occasion. My son is now an adult & even though we do not often eat together as a family he has never been in any trouble. Not even a parking ticket. He does not binge drink, smoke, is not violent & doesn't do drugs. Does this mean the findings of the report are rubbish or have we just been lucky?

I've always heard that for the best size, you should be able to walk around the table when everyone is seated without having to hold your stomach in!!; that is, enough room all around the area where the chairs are..

Make sure it's big enough that the kids can't kick each other. We have that problem every night when we sit down for dinner.
