I hope so, my wife is a teacher, I am a teacher, many of our friends and relatives are teachers, and we all exist. Come to think of it, I've seen my wife in the classroom recently, but she hasn't seen me in a classroom for a long time.

I am tempted to say, they exist everywhere but in school.
In school they are just the models. As long you have a model in your mind, of your teacher, you tend to obey and listen more. And more so, when you pay for your school and your parents expect you to fear the teacher, your that awe for teacher magnified.
Secondly, Everything we see outside teaches us something, more so when you are a self-taught and teacher taught person and that helps only to some extent. There are geniuses who were taught just by life alone.
Thirdly, when you see your real teachers from school appearing in person the normal surrounding outside the school, you get a strong sense of impropriety as if they don’t belong there, say in a bar, or in a bathroom, or in a kitchen, or in your best friends house or bedroom etc. Then the wiser your are, in the sense the more mature you are, you will be able to compartmentalize your mind to different facets of life, say you mature well, and it wont surprise you any in such instances.

One year out of school two of my teachers joined my darts team ( I was captain), another got drunk at an officers mess I was invited to and dribbled pink gins all over me all night, and I watched my geography teacher getting more than a lap dance in one of the local strip joints.
So Yes, teachers exist outside school.
Although generally what surprised me most, especially about the female teachers was how the sarcasm became friendly conversation once we met socially. I really got on with most of them.
Never felt awkward, in the off season got invited to the teachers common room for a challenge match, my darts team versus the teachers (of course we hosted them back at our place the following week), everyone got drunk and had a great time. They never saw me as anything else than a bloke, and neither did I of them.

They shouldn't "exist" outside of school but that's just the reality of it. A good teacher should be indistinguishable - feeling awkward means the teacher is doing something wrong. You should turn the tables and make them feel awkward!

They most certainly do. At the moment I'm doing a degree in Spanish hoping to be a teacher, and I will exist! I'm also close friends with teachers who have taught me in the past, one of them being one of the funniest people I have evet met in my life. They're just doing a job. I guess that's like asking "Do supermarket staff exist outside of the supermarket?"

That is truth. I am a young teacher and I know that my staying in the school of practical training is just temporary. So - outside school I try to treat my students in a more casual way. But they still call me "miss", not by name, and say "good afternoon" instead of "hi!". So - the myth exists;)))

I used to live in the same neighborhood as my middle school English teacher. I kid you not- the woman would put her hand up to her face to shield her eyes when she saw me. I wasn't a bad kid, quite pleasant in fact. She did that with everyone. She would actually hide her face!!! On the other side of the coin, I had a high school teacher who would shove his face in front of mine while I was working when he shopped at my store. "Glad to see you working hard!"
As a teacher myself now, I love seeing my students out in public. It doesn't happen enough. They're too darn cute to only get to see on weekdays.
The real reason we feel awkward when we see our teachers outside of school is because they're aliens. I thought everyone knew that.

I'm a teacher and I exist. Though I must be abit sad answering daft questions on a Friday night.
Have you ever considered how exciting it is to see your dodgy students outside of school. Not my idea of fun.
