you can send sms from yahoo, rediff, indiatimes and quite a few others.most work in the same way.... BUT THE BEST IS "cHIKKA"
you can do the following, it works pretty well......
1. visit http://www.chikka.com/
2. go to India from the country tab on the right top corner.
3. Download the chikka software. Please have your AntiVirus s/w active, before download.
4. you will need to register first. you can have an unified account
5. After you have registered and have downloaded the software, you will have a chikka window on your desktop.
6. just type in the mobile number to where you want to text. remember to add the country code (91 for India)
7. type in your message
8. click send
it should work, i use it often. remember, your friend needs to respond atleast once to be allowed to send and receive message.

Yahoo messanger used to be able to do this, dono if it still does, you just put in the 10-Dijit phone bumber and it sends whatever you type, Other than that get a Cell E-Mail Address, and use e-mail
