Gloucestershire Police force have admitted that 108 applications to join the workforce were unsuccessful because the applicants were White Males.

Surely people should be considered for jobs on their ability - not their race or gender? The UK Government have told Police Forces that they need to employ more Ethnic and Female people, and whilst I agree, surely giving them quotas to fulfill is the wrong way to go about it?

The UK has got it all messed up.
While the intentions are probably good, in their attempt to be more 'ethnically aware' and so on, they are actually creating more tension and hatred.

How do you think young white men will feel now who may have wanted to be police men when they see hoardes of 'ethnic' folk and women walking round as coppers...

By all means be racially or sexually equal, it's only fair - but giving certain races (not always the native one) special preference is not right.

This just sounds like a case of pitifully poor management. Lots of these 'quotas' are set as a guide, to give local authorities an idea of the target they are aiming for; unfortunately we have far too many mediocre bureaucratic paper pushers in these organizations, who spend more time arguing about the meaning of the quotas than trying to do something positive about the issue that needs addressing.

Police forces around the country have an unenviable balancing act on their hands. They are perceived by many communities as inherently racist, so often have an unofficial 'softly, softly' approach to policing in these areas; that is, of course, until some local politician needs to do a bit of rabble rousing at election time and push for action to be taken. It ends up as a real Catch 22, because they are deemed ineffective the 'ethnic' communities want little to do with them, yet they really need to engage with them to try to find a positive way for the future.
