Chiffon is an elegant, sheer, lightweight, transparent plain-weave fabric made of cotton, silk, or synthetic fiber; it is made of fine, highly twisted, strong yarn, with a very slightly rough feel to it. Chiffon is lightweight but strong. It is most often used for loose, full, flowing garments. Popular for dresses, scarves and nightgowns. Often the lightest weight and most diaphanous of the silks, Chiffon is also the most see-through. It creates the "billows" of fabric that add dimension to garments, but generally requires some kind of lining or backing unless it's used for scarves. Chiffon can come in various weights and in different fabrics, such as: polyester chiffon, poly/cotton blend chiffon, silk chiffon, etc. Depending on the fabric type, this fabric may or may not breathe well. Natural fibers like cotton have good circulation whereas polyester, rayon and velvets may be hotter. Hard to cut out and sew because it is so flimsy and slippery. Doesn't show pin holes. Some chiffon is made with a special starch that may waterspot if it gets wet. Check a small piece before you attempt to wash a chiffon garment. A good dry cleaner can remove the water spots.

Chiffon, which is a French word for rag, is a lightweight sheer material with a slightly rough feel to it. It can be made from cotton, silk or synthetic fibers, but is usually associated with silk or nylon and can be dyed to almost any shade desired. If made from Polyester, it is difficult to dye. Under a magnifying glass it resembles a fine net or mesh which allows chiffon to have this see-through property.

Chiffon is most commonly used in evening wear, especially as an overlay, giving an elegant and floating appearance to the gown. It is also a popular fabric used in blouses, ribbons, scarves and lingerie. It is not, however, an easy fabric to work with because of its lightweight and slippery nature. Due to its delicate nature, chiffon must be hand washed very gently. It is very easy to tear inside a washing machine. A garment made of chiffon can rip apart while the wearer is sleeping in it. Most chiffon nowadays is made from polyester (for stain resistance) which is woven as a Stretch-knit fabric. Stretch-knit is a way of making non-stretchable fabrics stretch. However silk Chiffon is still regarded as the premiere type of Chiffon. It is dry cleanable and does not suffer from the same level of degradation and tearing as Polyester Chiffon. It is stocked as piece-dyed (all one colour) or cross-dyed (in iridescent colours) by a series of major textiles companies such as Henry Bertrand, Saris and Sfate et Combier

Fabric quality varies in very large degrees. Cost isn't always a driver for high quality, but for the most part it is a key indicator. There is no high quality dress that costs less than 200 dollars like some of these prices on eBay. It's just an impossibility if you take into account of labor costs etc. A wedding gown is typically structured with a number of different fabric combinations to deliver the final result. The best designer gowns in the world utilize both techniques (which takes time) and high-end materials (which costs money). An inexpensive will be built like a Halloween costume. It has the final effect from afar and on the surface, but a close up will reveal that it's lacking many major time consuming components that makes a gown great or designer level.
