The only Portuguese colony in America, Brazil, didn't break up in different nations. The reason the Spanish-speaking countries broke up is that the local elites couldn't reach an agreement. As you can see the areas in America with Spanish colonization are very large. It's like asking to Morocco and Saudi Arabia to get together in one single country, they will never reach an agreement. As you probably know, once divided, it's very difficult to unify again. People in Latin America dream about making one single country but it's very complicated. In Latin American countries you have different degrees of development, this makes things complicated. And finally, you have the politics. In Latin America is not like in Europe where both left and right have gone to the center. Will be very difficult to convince presidents like Álvaro Uribe and Hugo Chávez that they should join together.

mmmmm..........mmmm..........mmmm................
1) They are states just like the US. They haven't gotten together but that is what Hugo Chavez wants and Simon Bolivar's dream.
Something like the "Latin American Union", kind of like the European Union.

2) Hope something like that happens one day but US is making an effort to avoid that.

3) They aren't together because first world countries are controlling many Latin American governments through their neo-liberal policies. Many are basically US branches (ie: Mexico, Colombia) Americans are in their government.

4) You may ask why they don't want them together. Well, divide and conquer. Simple.
