Avoid alcohol. Of course, you probably wouldn't be reading this if you had decided to avoid it completely. Just realize that excessive drinking of alcohol is what causes most hangovers. The next steps assume that you are planning on a night of drinking.
Eat a good dinner before you go out. If you can stomach it, drink some milk or olive oil. The food will absorb some of the alcohol you are about to drink, and the milk or olive oil will line your stomach, creating a protective layer.
Choose clear alcohol like vodka, white wine, and light rum instead of red wine, whisky, brandy, and sherry. Similarly the dark beers have more consequence the morning after.
Continue eating as you drink. Fats and carbs will put a brake on alcohol absorption, while eating sugars will replace the sugar stores that the booze removes from your liver.
Drink a glass of water after every alcoholic drink. Alcohol dehydrates your body--this causes the headaches and other aches you feel during a hangover. One glass of water in between every glass of alcohol is a good principle.
Know your limits. Avoid getting into buying rounds among your friends, as this will just encourage you to drink more. Instead, just buy your own drinks at your own pace, or agree to a certain budget with your companions.
Drink another glass or two of water when you return home, and, if possible, have something else to eat, especially a banana or two.
Take a multivitamin or liver salts before bed to replace the vitamins and minerals lost as a result of drinking alcohol, and drink plenty of water to rehydrate yourself. If you ate a good meal before going out, this step may be unnecessary. But better safe than sorry.
If you feel a hangover coming on in the morning, take some advil, drink several large glasses of water, and go back to sleep.
Drink slowly. Your body burns alcohol at a regular rate of roughly 30ml (1oz) an hour. Give it more time to burn that alchohol and less will reach your brain.

I suffer really bad from hangovers and usually have my head down the toilet bowl the following day!!! Before i go out i make sure i've ate something and i drink milk (usually strawberry milk mmmm). I usually get one glass of water and would sip this all nite with my drinks. When i get in i make sure i drink a pint of water but the most important thing you could do is take two alka setlzers before going to bed. These are a life saver. I ran out last week hence on Sunday i was ill until the evening!!! Drinking water, eating and drinking milk all help but it is def alka seltzers that prevent my hangover!!!

Eat. Don't mix your drinks. Know when to stop drinking. The main one is knowing when to stop - you can drink as much water with your booze as you can, but you will still get a hangover if you have too much. Nothing can prevent it if you drink to excess. personally, I find my limit to be 4 pints of beer - it takes roughly 8 hours for my body to get rid of most of the alcohol in these, so when I wake up, I'll be sober, rather than suffering from alcoholic poisoning - which a hangover is a mild form of.

Hangover is cause by dehydration, which causes the brain to come away from the skull lining, hence why you get the hangover feeling. When I've been out make sure that I drink at least 1 pint of water, when I've got in. I find that helps.
Also, something called Milk Thistle is supposed to be good for preventing/curing hangovers.
Hope that helps.

Apart from not drinking too much? Well, the best way is to eat before you go drinking, and then to drink lots and lots and lots of water all the way through the evening (hangovers are caused by dehydration). And don't mix your drinks.

There is nothing you can do to prevent it. All the things mentioned will help lessen the hangover but if you drink enough you will always get a hangover.
And to the person that said "only wimps get hangovers" - IDIOT! You obviously don't drink properly, you shandy drinking poof!

watch what you drink. I found that dark beers give me hangovers while light beer and lager do not. Its something to do with the chemical structure in the stuff. The obvious thing is not to drink to much. Also drink plenty of water before bed to help stop dehydration.

I've heard various things about this:
1 - take a herb called Milk Thistle
2 - eat a large stodgy meal before going out
3 - for every drink, drink a glass of water
4 - also take a big dose of vitamin B - prevents you losing your memory. Doctors actually prescribe this to alcoholics
Now I just need to take my own advice.

Eat a good meal before going out and drink at least a pint of water on your return. This works for me every time.
