I have my practical test on the 2nd October 2006, so obviously I'm nervous, but my instructor is no good. He barely speaks english, and I was told I was not allowed to change instructor for this reason, so if anyone ELSE could help me, please reply to this question.

Thirdly people seem to pass or fail at the whim of the driving examiner. Some people I know failed for stupidly vague things like "driving too far from the edge of the road". They were not over the white line or even too close to the white line, just not close enough to the edge for the examiners liking. Maybe the examiner was trying to pick flowers or something. Other drivers I know passed despite driving on footpaths during their tests but were told, "you just need some experience, and sure you wont get that without your license". If you are a pedestrian in Ireland you will know that footpaths and pedestrian crossings are not something fully qualified drivers pay much notice to. There has to be a happy medium between the two standards.

I'd have to say that barely speaking English isn't the problem.
He still has a certificate that allows him to do his job and says he knows what he's doing.
Try taking a few deep breaths just before you get in the car then pretend the instructor is your best friend. Don't talk to him or anything, when I took my test (a 100 years ago it feels like) we weren't allowed to talk to the instructors, but mentally treat him like he's your best friend. That should lower the stress a little.
They also don't allow any music playing while the test is going on.
Just try to relax and not get distracted and you'll be fine.
Good Luck.

I would go out and drive with someone who has been driving for a while and practice the general rules of the road. That way you can work on the specific things you are having trouble with. As for the written test. Study everthing in the books and don't stress. You will find that you don't have to speak English to learn drive. When you pass the test, as I am sure you will, there is one thing anyone from any language will understand. Look him straight in the face and flip him the bird to thank him for his help.

Usually, most have difficulty with the parallel parking. Practice that with someone else in the car with you beforehand. But, parking usually isn't big points on the test whearas Yield signs are.

Come to almost a complete stop at Yield Signs. When entering a freeway ramp DO NOT stop unless it is absolutely necessary as you had a Yield sign coming on. Have your signal going to enter lane. Holds true for traffic circles and merging lanes.

And, they may bait you by not having their seat belt on. Make a big deal out of checking mirrors, everyone belted, the seat adjustment.

You'll do fine.

Not using your mirrors at the appropriate times - get into this habit of using them all the time so it becomes second nature and I would ditch the driving instructor and go to another driving school if you dont feel hes helping you enough.

first,in cali they don't test you on a course, they take you on a drive in the neighborhood. definite fails are not doing as the examiner asks, unless it is unsafe-they may throw those at you to see if you are paying attention and are alert-or an accident-duh? fatsten your seatbelt, check your mirrors, use signals, care anddon't cut anyone off---and RELAX- you will do fine-most accidents I know of are caused by nervous people who panic or overreact when in a situation.....just be calm and follow instructions and requests for the examiner-and no rolling stops -lol- you will be fine-welcome to the road!

I passed my first time, despite stopping in a crosswalk.

This instructor I had, oh man. His hair was disgusting. I could support McDonald's nation-wide with the grease you could've squeezed from his head.

I scrubbed the HELL out of my seat once I got home.

I think you'd fail immediately if you run a red light, hit another car, and hit the curb when try parallel park.

just concentrate, but dont drive so tense and remember the key points of the test, but dont sweat em. so you'll be a smooth and conscience driver.
