Holland went into WW2 as a neutral country - like Switzerland, but Germany simply wanted the land.
So they took it.
It didn't help that Holland was not at all prepared for a war. Dutch soldiers were even driving around on bicycles! As part of the conquest, Germany bombed Rotterdam, which was and still is Holland's second largest city (after Amsterdam), and of vital economic interest to Holland due to the large sea port. Holland surrendered in just 3 days.
Apart from simply wanting the land, Germany also had two military objectives:
* to launch an attack on Great Britain (and prevent allied troops from organizing on the European main land)
* to go through Holland and Belgium into France, because the French defensive line was only put up along the French-German border.
Once Germany had occupied Holland, Allied troops dropped bombs on German positions in Holland throughout the rest of the war.
