I'm taking a Humanities course and avidly reading a work by Robert D. Kaplan An Empire Wilderness in which he describes so any instances where America has moved in a total opposite and will soon suffer civil unrest due to growing panic and a variety of other cultural and economic problems.

Considering the many other civilizations/cultures that have self destructed can we expect the same, and if we can what will be that timetable?

You are funny. Americans are the LAST PEOPLE ON EARTH to stand up and raise against their leaderships. Thanks to STRONG MEDIA MACHINE PROPOGANDA Americans are so naive, so busy with their day to day work and career, they don't pay attention what's happening. As long Starbucks and McDonald's are opening more of their restuarants, Americans will always chill and enjoy FOXNEWS!.

Civil unrest comes when the majority of the minority have had enough.
What with high health costs, low minimum wages, increased taxes, and a shortened surplus, coupled with every State becoming increasingly more militaristic in it's police matters turning every place into a police State, it is no wonder the unrest and civil area has not deteriorated faster.
Unless we learn that personal privacy's, and personal choice is just that, PERSONAL, and so long as we continue to prosecute " victimless crimes", the more of a police state we will have, and the more unrest until something blows.
Live, and let live, and leave your neighbor alone if he is leaving you alone would help.
Otherwise, if we don't help each other from starving, or going homeless, when we get there, no one will be there to help us.
The signs are here.
Wake up, before it is too late.

Meaning it in the nicest possible way ( and I can already hear you saying that that is a non starter) I hope so.
Nations can get complacent about the issues that really count.
Small disturbances in the fabric of nationhood stir things up enough to create change and filter out some of the irrational hatreds and misconceptions that we are all prone to.
Huge patterns of civil and social unrest? I hope not. It largely depends on the strength of the economy...!

I believe that civil unrest is already present and growing.
As an optimist, I believe that hopefully we will learn how to work it out better than in the past, because we DO have more documented and even recent history to learn from.
Also, Democracy is intended to be BY THE PEOPLE and FOR THE PEOPLE, so it is designed to give room for change, which sometimes includes the possibility of uproar.
As much power as we do give our government, it still cannot operate without some from of approval by the population it serves.

We argue amongst ourselves to a great extent but we pull together when it counts. So I doubt we are in for a period of true civil unrest.
