On the prospective employee's thoughts on the employer, this question cuts both ways:

"The very fact that the hiring company have to ask goes to show that the boss or HR does not know what they want, which direction to take the business, that they have employed experienced people not being fully utilised as a result of lack of competent managers. What am I in for ?"

alternatively;

"I have a fresh perspective on how this part of the business should be run, here is how it might be seen and run, (illustrate) and not yet entrenched in the customary positions . Employing me gives you the advantage of an independent set of eyes and hands, provided you make use of the opportunity."

or:

"These are the skills and abilities that I bring to the job (illustrate in relevance to the job position), how you choose to deploy me would be to the best of your abilities from which I seek to match your trust in my ability; unless you are inferring that there is an opportunity to create my job scope and progression around the business, in which case, I will be interested in hearing more of your department/business and take that under advisement."

Due to my experience level, I would offer a new solution which others may have not thought of doing. Sometimes people are so used to doing things they way they do because that's the way it has always been done (not neccesarily because it is the most efficient way, but because they are comfortable doing things that way). Sometimes you need an "outsider's" opinion to see the big picture and what is really going on.

WOW! Appoint me for what? I think you should appoint me because no matter what the appointment is for, I am generally more intelligent than anyone else you would appoint. I have very strong convictions and am rarely rendered voiceless on any subject.
