Subaru only builds cars with horizontally-opposed engines, also refered to as flat or boxer engines, because the cylinder banks oppose one another at 180 degrees. Most car engines are In-line or V's. The advantage to the H engines is a higher torque rating compared to similar displacement engine of I or V configuration, also the flat engines can sit lower in the car which means the center of gravity is lower and the cars will corner better. Porsche's 911 is the only other car that uses this type of engine.

Generally the boxer engines are very durable, and the only disadvantage is they do make more noise that other types, which I like because it's possible to hear what the engine is doing so it's not neccessary to look away from the road to check the tachometer during high speed driving, particularly during cornering near the cars' limits.

This is one swap I don't recommend.... Reason The Pan Cake 2.5 WRX STI Turbo engine and transmission is a bit wide for the Eclipse UnIbody... If you have unlimited funds go for it would like to see that one. You will need a complete Tube frame built for the engine and transmission 1st... Then modify the body to fit the Tube frame... This will cause the car to sit a little high. If you want the power of WRX in Your Eclipse Just Find a TSI AWD Eagle or GST AWD Eclipse and put 2 together. Get the bigger Turbo, NX system and stand alone Fuel management system... And most likely blow the WRX a-way and maybe a Ferrari or a Z/28 also... Don't forget a good header and exhaust system don't make the exhaust to big 2 1/2 " to 2 3/4" will work the best... Good Luck on your Project and if you get it done I'd like to see what it can do in the 1/4 mile.... Side note: I was woundering If someone can Modify the rear body where you could use the WRX as a rear wheel drive Eclipse and just no back seat??? It is wide enough... But no AWD forsure...

alrighty. 2006 wrx and sti both have the 2.5l engine. 2002-2005 wrx had the 2.0l, and the 04-06 sti have the 2.5l. the sti does have a more noticable exhaust due to it's larger displacement, larger turbo, catless up-pipe, larger diameter exhaust. a stock sti exhaust is not so noisy that it is a nuisance, so whatever sti singapore has must come with an aftermarket exhaust. the evo has a 2.0l engine, but a slightly better turbo. the evo9 now comes with mi-vec, but the technology has been on the sti for a while now. all in all, the sti and the evo are both excellent cars. sti has dccd, which allows the driver to control the torque split between the front and rear wheels, and the evo8 mr and evo9 has ayc (automatic yaw control) which helps to balance out the yaw when cornering. asking which engine is better is not a simple question to answer. the 4g63 evo engine has been around forever and can be somewhat easier to work on for novice mechanics. the 2.5l sti engine is just as durable with its closed deck design with the only real drawback is the 04's lack of forged pistons. doing head-work on the h4 is a time consuming process, but not impossible for the diy'er. as for "do subaru's engine complicate?", i'm not quite sure what you mean. do subaru engines have problems? sure, all engines do. do subaru engines have problems more than the mits-evo? not really. if you are interested in modding an sti or an evo, both are once again about even. both cars have been built for 9-second passes on the 1/4 mile, both have reliable engines for plenty of boost. subaru is an awesome rally car, evo an awesome track car. if you could give us some insight on what you plan to do then we can give you a more direct answer!
