Nitrogen compounds, such as ammonium salts, have high enthalpy (energy) levels, so nitrogen is more likely to be found in the form of free nitrogen. Compare to oxygen and hydrogen, which can also exist in free form, but have lower enthalpy when forming compounds which are liquid (water) or solid (carbonates). Therefore, hydrogen is barely found in the atmosphere, while oxygen would barely be found in the atmosphere if it were not for the green plants which suck up CO2, thereby keeping the atmosphere out of the equilibrium in which it would be without green plants.
