They are 12 characters but I can only remember 9 of them.
The platform is Nintendo 64 but it has a sequel called Super Smash Bros Melee, on Nintendo Gamecube.
It's a wicked game, I know because I have it.
P.S. If you are thinking that it's weird for an adult to play games, I'm not. I'm 12.

Super Smash Brothers for Gamecube or Nintendo 64. i suggest the gamecube version: much better
