I'm a new Muslima. Last year, I was invited to a dinner in Ramadan. I dressed up tidy and put some make-up on to be looking fine because I wanted to show some gratitude and respect for the host family.
But I started to find out that Muslim ladies don't dress up during Ramadan, while, they turn so gorgeous nicely in following holiday.
What I did was wrong? No cosmetic in Ramadan?

I want to ask this questuion as an Islamic culturual question. That's why I didn't categolized this to religion.
Women are nice and they don't tell me what I should do here. But I don't want to stand out by doing something "xeno-muslim"like.
What I want to know is "women are not supposed to put make up on during Ramadan, aren't they?"

I think you should not wear lots of make up any time during the year, men strangers should not see you like that, in Ramadan usually women do not wear lip stick during the day because some people say that it will break your fast when you lick your lips, but it is not a rule, it depends on the people around you

Salamo Aleikom,

you are welcomed new Muslima :)

because you are new to islam i want to tell you something, if you want to learn islam and be a good muslim don't take muslims as a role model (without thinking)... read books and hear to scientists and ask them, the problem is that many muslims are not really good followers of islam and some good followers lack knowledge because they didn't have the chance to learn islam in a proper basis.

so regarding to your case and instead of talking i give you a link:
http://www.islamqa.com/index.php?ln=eng (searh for Hijab)

from the many questions you will understand rulings about Hijab and what should a muslim really wear infront of men and women.

i don't know what people around you have teached you about islam, so if you were teached wrong things you might find it a bit difficult, but hope Allah will enlighten your sight and guide you!

this is the truth, i should say it weather you liked it or not, or you want us to trick you and find you are tricked when you meet Allah?!! Maybe this is this a test for you.

if you want to ask specialists, there are a couple of sites i can give:
http://www.amjaonline.com/english (serves US)
http://www.e-cfr.org/eng/ (serves Europe)
http://www.islamqa.com
http://www.islamtoday.com

those are some websites which you can ask in, the first two are big organizations.

hope Allah will guide you to the truth, and make you one of its followers.

You did no wrong on that occasionYou can put make up as you like if you are invited to a party at night during ramadhan. But most of muslimas put a light make up during ramadhan if they want go out.At home they can put make too for the sake of their husbands.Dressing up during ramadhan is up to their own habit. So in ramadhan you can use cosmetic but wear it in a light color.so it looks no contrast to others. You are welcome to be a new muslima .I hope you will fasting in this ramadhan.May God bless you and you always be in healthy and wealthy condition.

Assalamualaikum,

As much as possible, Quranic and Islamic law forbid a woman from adorning herself (i.e. make-up and jewelry) because it might be a cause for a man to sin (i.e. look at a woman lustfully).

Modesty has always been one of the traits of Muslims (both men and women).

During Ramadan, most cultures require all Muslims to wear very plain clothes. For women, it's the full body covering (abaya).

It's ok, you're still new. Welcome Sister.

Alhomdulillah.

Peace.

Well, I don't know where you live but I live in the U.S. and I wear makeup during Ramadan. No one gives me a hard time about it. Then again it depends where you are. What country do you live in? Most would really say that it's up to personal interpretation. Maybe those people just have a more conservative view about it.

You can wear kohl(eyeliner anytime) and can only wear other makeup for your husband. But it is okay if you make mistakes every once in a while, you're a new Muslim remember that! If other Muslim women gave you a hard time they were just jealous and jealousy is haram.

I never heard that. There are differences of culture so maybe it was a cultural thing not a religious thing. And also a lot of ppl mistake culture for religion.
