Why are the men often bald-headed?

The gene that causes 'male pattern baldness' doesn't effect women, even 'tho they're the ones that pass it to their male offspring. If your mothers father was bald, there's something like a 70% chance that you will be as well.

This had genetic background. Baldness in males is a Sex Linked
trait. The gene for baldness is expressed only in the males but not in females, although it is present in them also.

Most men are genetically predisposed to male pattern baldness. It is the effect of hormones on the hair follicle that produces male pattern baldness. Testosterone, a hormone that is present in high levels in males after puberty, is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. DHT has an adverse affect on the hair follicles. Acting on a hormone receptor on the hair follicle it slows down hair production and produces weak, shorter hair, sometimes it stops hair growth from the follicle completely. This process gradually depletes your stock of hair and is normal hair loss.

nah, just kidding...that's only for gray hairs.

The only reason I can think of that we don't see many bald women, other than the reason given by Doug, is that many women, once they begin going bald, buy wigs or extensions. They're more conscience about their hair thinning that they buy things to cover it up with.
