In my Vauxhall Corsa SXi 16v 1.2 (52/2003)

Is this basically time for a new gear box or can something be done cheaper or simpler?

Any advice welcome!!!

If its hard to get into all the gears then I'd agree with most people and say its the clutch, but if its only first and second, then it could be the gear linkage, or the gears themselves.

Either way, if you're not sure about what you're looking at (and I guess thats the case since you asked on here), then take it to a mechanic and ask them for a quote.

Corsas are common so you could probably get a working gearbox from a breakers and have it fitted for a couple of hundred pounds.

It might also be worth trying it on with a Vauxhall dealership. The car is only just out of warranty (unless it has an extended warranty), so they might look at it for free. Its worth a try.

It may not necessarily be time for a new gearbox. I had the same happen on my Mini and it turned out to be a faulty slave cylinder which helps operate the clutch. It meant that the clutch didn't fully engage due to a lack of hydrolic push, hence the loud crunch every time.

I would take it to a reputable garage (i.e. Mr Clutch - they are nationwide and very helpful http://www.mrclutch.com/ ) and have it checked. They do clutches, gearboxes, brakes, etc and are very good I've found.

A new slave cylinder was only £12 for the part and £70 for labour....but that's on a mini. Corsa's won't be much more expensive I expect.

It may be the thrust bearing on your clutch but could also be the selector arms on your gearbox , these are replaceable.

I would look through your local directory for garage specialising in gearboxes and ask them.

If you take it to a main dealer they will probably be talking a years salalry and qoute you for a new gear box whatever is wrong with it to cover themselves.

Not so long ago I had Sticky Valves evidently The Ford main dealer said it would be a £900 + job. I took it to a company specialising in engine rebuilds (they do nothing else but engines, not brakes etc) and they charged me £300

Could be one of several things. Usually it means that the tranny synchronizers are shot, but it could be that the clutch is not releasing all the way, the gear teeth are damaged, the shifter bushings are worn out, or it could be a problem with the shift rods.

Regardless, get a mechanic to check it out. If you get to it soon, it might be repairable for a reasonable fee. The longer you wait, the worse (more $$$) it gets.

with such a vital part of the mechanics of a car, I would have thought the most commonsense answer would be to have the problem assessed by qualified people and from their seek quotations to resolve the problem from all sources. Unless of course you were fortunate enough at the time of purchase to take out extended warranty which is still in force, if that's so you have no problem.

When this happens, it is possible that the retaining screws which keep the engine in place may be at fault. Added pressure from the weight of the engine onto the gearbox can make it extremely difficult to place into 1st and 2nd gear.

Take it to the garage soon as you can, saves further damage.

Not really, unless it is something simple like something is stuck in the gear box (extremely unlikely) or you have a gear box leak or something (still quite unlikely).

Best take it to vauxhall to have them see what is wrong. Then go somewhere to get it fixed.

Sounds like your selector is out of alignment. No point playing with it yourself I'd just take it to a Vauxhall garage and they'll re-align it for you, easy fix.

Sounds like it's the clutch...gear stick tough to move, have to force it into gear...
clutches (at least in saturns) usually last about 80,000 miles. If you car's lasted that long on one clutch, then it's time to take it in & get it replaced. But if you don't get it fixed, then you could mess up your transmission, which you REALLY don't want to do. Clutches aren't fun to have replaced but aren't NEARLY as much to replace as transmissions.

have you just had a new clutch fitted? if so the selector arm may need adjusting if not could be the thrust bearing
