I recived an email from someone claiming to be the Lybian head of security, quite obviously it was a con as he was asking for funds. I wish it was possible to get back at them some how!
Any ideas?

What you have described here is known as an advanced fee scam.

See below link for details -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_fee_fraud

"Advance fee fraud is a confidence trick in which the target is persuaded to advance relatively small sums of money in the hope of realizing a much larger gain.

Currently the most visible form of the fraud is the Nigerian Letter or 419 fraud named after the section of the Nigerian criminal code that it violates."

If you want to try to get back at them have a look at -

but be careful - they can be nasty people!

I use spam reporters like Okopipi and KnujOn and what they do is take the spam emails and report it to the proper places. These place in turn are supposed to fine or notify the spammer that they are doing something illegal. Works in Thunderbird. Join the fight.

I've read somewhere an article of someone who actually managed to even get money from this by pretending to be interested but needing some cash to get things in order... Tricky business, so I wouldn't advise you on trying this, especially since I cannot find this article anymore... :-/

I'd advise to report it to the authorities, here's an article on a similar Nigerian scam, where they actually caught the criminals, so it might help you get in touch with the right people to tackle this.

Fight, fight, fight!!! Yes, we love a fight don't we!!! OK, seriously, a few good suggestions. The truth though is it's not easy to fight them but the best thing to do is report them where possible. Hotmail opens a question box asking you, if you've marked them would you like to report them too. Other mail servers just send them straight into a spam/junk mail folder. That's all I can suggest, but do check the links suggested.

Don't reply to them...if you do, then they know the address exists, and they'll continue to send junk to you.
Sometimes, when I read them, I like to send them to the F.B.I. (www.fbi.gov). They probably get a ton of emails each day anyway, but for all you know, you may be sending them a scam they don't know about, and probably should.
Otherwise, I'd just say mark them as spam.

only go down the route of reporting them to owner of the domain or spam lists. Do not try to spam them back as this will see you end up on spam list yourself and could see you banned by your isp and/or email company.

I do like it. Chop it up into small sq. chunks, fry it off in some oil with onions and garlic and then upload a tin of chopped tomatoes. Simmer and then eat with pasta and grated cheese. less expensive pupil foodstuff!!

Am I the only person on this site who absolutely loves spam?

Battered and deep fried, liberally splattered with HP Sauce.

report it to yahoo abuse and they will ban that person. I know they can just get another e-mail addy but it does bring satisfaction knowing they have to do it all over again and that that email will never be allowed again.
