Most likely I would say yes. If you look at the animal kingdom, ironically it is the males that usually look better than the females. For instance, the male peacocks are the ones with the large, colorful feathers that they spread out in an effort to attract females.

The better looking individuals in virtually all societies tend to gain favor, and this has been the status quo throughout recorded history. Beauty and health have always been seen as "good genetic quality", and since the ultimate goal of any species is to perpetuate itself, logic would dictate that this applied even to the Neanderthals.

Author Jean Auel wrote a novel about neanderthals called "Clan of the Cave Bear." During her research she learned about an anthropological dig where they found a neanderthal grave site in which the body was decorated with flowers. So that would be a fair basis for saying that yes, the neanderthals did value beauty.

I believe the answer is yes but their idea of beauty might have been radically different than homo sapiens.

I base that on my knowledge of cats. To a cat a big kitten is beautiful and they will let the small one die and care for the big one even if it isn't theirs.

I had a cat that used to look at my stateau of a big Egyptian diety cat for hours at a time. He clearly thought it was beautiful and interesting.

OK so we all have an idea of beauty that is different from individual to individual, society to society or culture to culture.

The Neandrethals are are relatives and I believe they would have seen beauty even if it was someone with big teeth. So if cats have a concept of beauty and they are much closer to us I believe they would have a concept of beauty of some kind.

It did'nt matter. They seen something they liked & they whacked it over the head with a club & dragged it back to the cave.I don't think beauty factored in that at all.
