My friend told me that you shouldnt drink when you have your period..is this just an old wifes tale..or does it have some truth behind it?

Because you might mistake something for that celery stick in your Bloody Mary?
I don't know other than bloating due to water retention.

Why not? I drank alcohol when I had my period, nothing bad has happened, except that I passed out (which is normal when I drink anyway), and leaked all over because I didn't change my pad.

Old wives tale.
Although you SHOULD drink plenty of water/juice and stuff so you dont get dehydrated. Alcohol won't do anything though (in moderation, of course).

alcohol waters down your blood, just like if you drink before you get a tattoo it has a better chance of fading cause it will bleed more...

it's because if you get depressed on your period, alcohol adds to the depression. if you don't get depressed you're good
