Since I saw many answers gave you wrong information....Here it is: You can take direct train Butterworth (Malaysia) - Bangkok(Thailand). It is express one with good facilities (sleeper & aircon). Incase you make the sight-seeing in Kaula Lumpur you can have two choices. i.e take train again from Kaula Lumpur to Butterworth and change train to Butterworth - Bangkok or any destinations in Thailand such as Hua Hin, Cha-Am. Both cities are twin cities. They are one of the Tourist Attractions for beach resort. Another option is overland by bus from Malaysia to Hat Yai (in Thailand). There are many tour operators providing coach to Hat Yai. From there again you can take either bus or train to any cities in Thailand. But if you want to go to the Northern Part or North Eastern part of Thailand you have to change the train at Bangkok. For your information you can make the reservation for train in any destinations around Thailand at any Railway Stations. Have a good trip.

There are at ;least three border crossings, so it depends from where in Malaysia to where in Thailand.
If you are on the East coast, going to say Koh Samui or Koh Phangan from Kelantan, the you get to the border by bus, walk through customs and catch a bus or train the other side - trail is best..
If you are on the west coast, then you can get a straight through bus or coach, which will stop at the border for formalities. Either way, its dead easy.
You get a thirty day stamp on arrival ion Thailand, so you don't need a visa unless you plan on staying a long time.
East coast of Malaysia's not too good at this time of year, otherwise I'd strongly recommend the Perhentian Islands, an absolute paradise.

I went once to Narathiwat (which is located in the South of Thailand) on 2003... I went there with my bestfriend... FYI, both of us are females... We travelled by train all the way from Kajang Train Station to Tumpat Train Station...

We crossed the Thailand border from Kelantan (I couldn't remember whether it was from the Pengkalan Kubur or Rantau Panjang) by riding some locals motorbikes... We paid them RM40 for the rides (RM20 per person)... I should say that we crossed the border illegally coz we didn't have any passports at that time... We took the risks & thank god it went well... They dropped & left us at a shopping area (I forgot the name) & we told them to pick us in another few hours... So they did & we managed to cross & came back to Malaysia safely...

Of course now, with all the bombings & feuds in the South of Thailand makes it kindda scary to go there again... But those experiences that my bestfriend & I had was awesome...

& also please check out this link coz it explains some details about the Malaysia-Thailand borders...

I hope you will have a nice & pleasant trip to Thailand... Bon Voyage... ;-)

Ms. PIMPA1949 alredy mentioned the right way to go (the cheapest way). I am a Malaysiam and working in Laos. I used to take a train from Butterworth to Bangkok and then my transite to the Laos-Thai border. The train is very clean and confortable.

If you are from KL (Kuala Lumpur) or other part of Malaysia (West Malaysia i means), the best is to take a bus to Butterworth (Penang or Pulau Pinang in Malay word). Its very convenience by bus depends where you are from. If from KL to Penang/Butterworth, there are many bus companies provide the services and you can get buses every MINUTES.

the Butterworth bus station is just next to the train station and reachable by foot.

Try not to take train from KL to Butterworth because there is 'no' immediate connection to Bangkok. You have to wait for many hours.

When you get the bus, just check out if they stop at Butterworth or not else the bus will direct to the island (Penang island) via the Penang Bridge. The best is, always tell the bus driver that you will get down to Butterworth.

Enjoy your holiday...

you can get to Thailand from Malaysia either by bus or train. most buses in Kedah, Perlis & Kelantan offers bus services to Thailand (usually to Hay Yai, Patani or Songkhla). even in Kuala Lumpur, you can get the express bus to Hat Yai.

the KTM @ Keretapi Tanah Melayu also offers their daily train service all the way to Haadyai from Kuala Lumpur. it departs everyday at 08:45pm from KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur & will arrive in Hat Yai at 11:15am the following day.
