How True this is, I don't Know. But, the Story Goes that the British Horse Racing Tracks were, and still are Clockwise in Direction with the Far Left Lane being the Optimum Position. As a Sign of Rebellion, American Horse Racing Tracks were set up to run Counter-Clockwise, with the far Right Lane being Optimal. This Tradition was Carried over to Roadways, First to Horse & Buggy Traffic, then, to the Automobile, which, at the Turn of the 20th Century was in Direct Competition with Existing "Traffic" and therefore had to Abide by the Rules of the Rutted Road ! When Henry Ford put the Steering Wheel on the Left Side of His Model T , That was it !

The rest of the world does not drive on the left.

* The English drive on the left due to the jousting days. The knights found it easier to do battle with their weapon in their right hand, ergo the side that they drive on to this day.

Here is a link to left side vs right side driving. Interestingly enough, the majority of the world's population drive on the right side of the road:

Happy driving and keep your eye on the road! :-)

Good question. I've always wondered which side other countries drive on. I'm sure the US isn't the only country to drive on the right, though.

I heard that it goes back to olden times.
When roads were invented in England, people defended themselves with swords. As most people were right-handed, they wore their swords on the left, so that they could draw them out easily. If two people travelling in opposite directions were passing each other, then they could fight right-handed on horseback if they stayed to the left of the road.
However, when roads were invented in USA. swords had gone out of fashion, and defence was by means of a pistol. This was worn on the right, and drawn with the right hand, so it seemed better for oncoming traffic to pass to the right of each other.

Seems a good story anyway.

Because Americans do everything wrong. ;-)

It has to do with the old wild west waggons.

Australians drive on the Left. Unless they want to get killed then they drive on the Right.

That's not true. Europe drives on the right side of the road, so do the Japanese and Australians.
